Regional Rail Museum Chennai - Tamilnadu
The Regional Rail Museum is established to exhibit the invaluable heritage of the Indian Railways, with a particular focus on the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) and its pivotal role in shaping the railway industry. The museum is situated in Perambur area, near Chennai, within the premises of the Integral Coach Factory (ICF). The ICF is one of the major production units of Indian Railways, responsible for manufacturing railway coaches.
The Chennai Rail Museum features five indoor galleries and a large outdoor exhibits park along with an ‘Art Gallery’ and a ‘Diamond Jubilee Gallery’. This incredible Museum provide a platform for visitors to explore the journey of Indian Railways and ICF, from its early days to the modern era, through a collection of railway-related artefacts, vintage coaches such as Ooty trains endemic to the Indian railways, steam engines belonging to various decades of the British Raj, locomotives and interactive exhibits. It also shed light on how railways connect communities, promote economic growth, and shape transportation networks in different regions of India.
The outdoor exhibits of Chennai Rail Museum are a treat in itself, featuring life-sized replicas of Nilgiri Mountain Railway coach, a GM inspection car, an MG EMU, a hospital van, a hand-operated crane, an overhead equipment car, a meter gauge EMU, an array of steam, diesel, and plough engines as well as more than 40 different models of trains.
The Regional Rail Museum in Chennai is an excellent destination for families, as it offers an opportunity for children and adults alike to explore the world of trains and railways. Additionally, there is a playground for kids and a toy train tour that takes visitors around the museum premises.
