The deities worshipped here is of Goddess Mutharamman and Swami Gnanamoorthiswaran. The temple is unique in many ways compared to other temples.
One such uniqueness is the combined vigraham [idol] of the Goddess and Lord inside the sanctum sanctorum, which is found nowhere else in the world. There is a story behind the idol. First the idol was a Swayambhu Lingam, a self-manifested one. Goddess appeared in the dreams of a sculptor and asked him to make an idol of her and wait for an archaka-priest coming from Kulasai. An archaka-priest was also informed by the Goddess in his dreams about the sculptor and asked him to install the idol near the Swayambhu Lingam.
The temple consists of three mandapams namely Artha Mandapam, situated next to Garbhagriha [sanctum sanctorum], Maha Mandapam and Kodi Mandapam.
The temple is situated at Kulasekarapattinam, a small town in Thiruchendur of Tuticorin district. The town got its name during the reign of King Kulasekarapandian. It is said that once the king had a darshan of the Goddess Mutharamman, and from then the town is named after him.
Legend has it that once Saint Agathiyar, being annoyed by Saint Varamuni cursed him to become buffalo head and was called Magisasuran. Magisasuran with continuous tapas [meditation] achieved a lot of power and started establishing his hold over the world. To put an end to Magisasuran’s wrath, a group of saints approached Goddess and presented their situation. Then a baby girl appeared suddenly, and she was named Lalithambigai. The girl got fully grown up in just 9 days. This day is celebrated as the Navaratri, which mean 9 nights. On the 10th day the angry powerful Goddess beheads Magisasuran and killed him. This day is celebrated as the most auspicious day of the temple, the Dussehra festival.

Major Festivals in Mutharamman Temple:

10 days Dussehra or Dasara festival celebrated during the Avani month [August-September] are the most auspicious days of the Muthumariamman temple. Millions assemble during the festival. The last day of the festival is really exciting as the picturisation of the epic story of Magisasura Mardini [Goddess] killing Magisasura is performed on the shores of Kulasekarapattinam. Other major festivals celebrated here are the Maha Shivaratri and Raghu Pooja.

By Air : Thiruvananthapuram International Airport is the nearest airport 163 kms away. Flights from all the major cities in India as well as abroad is available. Get down at the airport and grab a taxi or board in a government bus to Kulasekarapattinam.
By Rail : Nearest railway station is Tuticorin Railway Station. Bus is available from all the major cities in Tamil Nadu. After reaching Tuticorin Railway Station, board in a bus to Kulasekarapattinam [42kms].
By Road : Bus is available to Tuticorin from all the parts of Tamil Nadu State. From there get in a local bus to Kulasekarapattinam 42 kms away.

The temple is open for worship during morning hours 6:00 am to 11:00 am, and during evening hours 4:00 pm to 11:00 pm.
