Situated high in the midst of the city of Tiruchirapalli in Tamil Nadu, the Rockfort temple monument houses a Hindu temple dedicated to the worship of the Hindu Deity, Lord Ganesha. The city of Tiruchirapalli obtained its name from this famous monument, ‘Tiru-ssila-palli’ meaning ‘Holy-rock-town’. The Rock fort temple also known as Ucchi Pillaiyar temple houses a shrine for Lord Shiva and Lord Ganesh. This monument is located atop the hill and carved into a huge rock. This huge hill based in the center of the city of Trichy is over 3 billion years old. It took 300 men, eleven years to construct the temple. It is known as Rock fort temple as the fort near the temple was used as a military fortification by the Vijayanagara Empire and later by the British.
