Thiruvarur was one of the major capitals of the Chola dynasty. The great Chola king, Kulothunga Chola, ruled this city for a long period and contributed a lot in the fields of architecture and literature.

Later, this region was ruled by the Pandyas, the Vijayanagar Empire, the Marathas, and finally the British.

Thiruvarur has a rich heritage. The people living here are very traditional and known for their hospitality. Even in this modern era, the people of Thiruvarur stick to their customs, heritage, and traditions.

Thiruvarur remained a flourishing town under the Nayak and Maratha rule. The cultural and religious activities prospered, and it continued to hold its importance as a spiritual as well as cultural town. The most famous landmark in Thiruvarur, this temple is dedicated to Lord Thyagaraja, a form of Shiva. The temple complex is vast with impressive Dravidian architecture, intricate carvings, and several shrines.

Largest temple chariot The Thyagaraja Temple has one of the biggest temple chariots (rathas) in Tamil Nadu. The annual chariot festival, where the deity is taken on a procession, is a major event. Thyagaraja Car Festival is one of the most significant and grand festivals in Thiruvarur. It features the procession of the temple chariot and is attended by thousands of devotees. Panguni Uthiram is celebrated in the Tamil month of Panguni (March-April), this festival marks the celestial wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
